Sclerotherapy

by Jonathan Calure, M.D.

Sclerotherapy is a common treatment modality for small, superficial varicosities commonly referred to as “spider veins”. Sclerotherapy may also be used by a Vein Care Professional to treat deeper diseased veins.

A sclerotherapist uses an extremely fine needle to inject a sclerosant medication directly into the target vein and its branches. The sclerosant causes the treated veins to collapse, and has the visual effect of causing the vein to disappear. While this treatment is very effective, many patients note that veins reappear some months later in the region close to where treatment occurred. Often this is the case because the underlying cause, the source of venous reflux, had not been treated. If the cause of the small superficial varicosities has not been addressed, these varicosities can and do reappear.

Sclerotherapy services have been offered by a variety of medical subspecialists. It is imperative to consider your choice of sclerotherapist as there are complications that are best recognized and treated by a professional sclerotherapist in the setting of a Vein Care Specialty. Our sclerotherapist has over 20 years experience in sclerotherapy care.

We do offer professional sclerotherapy as part of our comprehensive array of vein care services at Maryland Vein Professionals. However, we do assess for and treat the underlying cause of these superficial varicosities before we recommend sclerotherapy. The sclerotherapy treatment itself is much more effective and the results much longer lasting when a healthy circulatory pattern has been restored by correction of underlying reflux.
