The VNUS Closure® Procedure

As of October 2011 Maryland Vein Professionals has performed over 11,000 VNUS Closure Procedures. Since January 2006, MVP has led the United States in absolute number of Closure Procedures Preformed by any practice, this according to VNUS Medical Technologies, Inc. Other Vein Centers in the region will try to post comparable numbers, and can only do so by combining numbers from multiple physicians in the group. Maryland Vein Professionals is proud to be a National Center of Excellence for this new procedure and has been designated a training center for this cutting edge technology.

The VNUS® Closure procedure, an alternative treatment option to traditional vein stripping surgery, brings state-of-the-art technology to an age-old disease. Treatment times are usually less than 2 minutes, and patients are in and out of the office in less than 90 minutes. By having the procedure at our pristine 3,600 square foot surgical center that is devoted exclusively to vein care one avoids the inconvenience and hassle of a hospital.

About The VNUS Closure® Procedure

The Closure procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Using ultrasound, your physician will position the Closure catheter into the diseased vein, through a small opening in the skin. The tiny catheter delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy to the vein wall. As the RF energy is delivered and the catheter is withdrawn, the vein wall is heated, causing the collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.

Following the procedure, a simple bandage is placed over the insertion site, and additional compression may be provided to aid healing. Your doctor may encourage you to walk, and to refrain from extended standing and strenuous activities for a period of time.

In the Spring of 2007 Dr. Calure was featured performing VNUS Closure on a live, nationally broadcast morning news program. You may see the video by clicking the link below:

Our patients often have enthusiastic responses following treatments. For many had been told that there was no hope but to wear uncomfortable venous compression stockings or undergo painful vein stripping surgery. For some, in their own words the effects of treatment are life-changing. Please take a moment to read their actual comments or see our collection of video testimonials here:
